Alison Murphy

"My work is about my love and appreciation of the rural New Brunswick landscape. I am inspired by the transformation of colour and texture that unfolds with each season.

I admire the way previous cultures respected this land and it saddens me how few people today appreciate the beauty which surrounds them. My work connects me to the earth; it forces me to slow down, and observe our landscape. Through my work I hope to encourage others to do the same.

I am constantly seeking innovative techniques and materials to incorporate into my work. Because of my environmental concern, I often use recycled fabrics, found objects and discarded packaging, which enables me to minimize the impact my work has on the environment. As often as possible, I source my fibre locally. I like to know that my wool comes from the farmer down the road; it further solidifies my connection with the land.

My initial design work is produced on paper. Working in layers I strive to keep the spontaneity of the original sketch, while allowing each piece to take on a life of its own, growing and changing organically as I work.

Although my training is in traditional textile methods, my work has evolved into an experimental practice. I needle-felt, sew, knit, embroider, stitch and appliqué different fibres and materials to create detail, texture and depth. I enjoy the freedom my work gives me to play with unusual colour combinations, fabrics and textures while connecting me to the earth. "
