Call for Workshop Instructors: Summer Shapes Workshop Series at The Charlotte Street Arts Centre

Craftspeople will be asked to be onsite with their tools and media demonstrating and instructing fine craft processes and practices.  It is our intention that this accessible series of workshops provides for the public an opportunity to engage with craft instructors and gain an appreciation of the cultural fabric of the city of Fredericton and the province of New Brunswick.

Workshops will be held in the outdoor space at the Charlotte Street Arts Centre weather permitting, and in the case of poor weather will be held in the multi-purpose room on the 2nd floor of the CSAC.

The workshop series will run for seven weeks, from July 8th to August 19th on Thursday afternoons from 1:00 – 4:00pm. Participants will be charged a nominal fee of $5.00.  The workshops are to be structured around a single project which can be completed in the three hour time period.

Please consider the budget for materials (250.00), the time allotted (3 hours), and the outdoor location when planning a workshop. We are hoping to partner with different community organizations for specific workshops, so please indicate if there is an age range that would be more appropriate for your workshop (i.e., children, seniors).

Individual workshops will be three-hour sessions and the fees paid are as follows:

            Materials Budget  250.00

            Instructor Fees 200.00

We can also reimburse travel expenses with receipts up to a maximum of 100.00 per artist. It may be possible to have a volunteer assisting during the workshops if necessary.

Please confirm by Friday, June 11th with the details of your proposed workshop so that we can prepare and distribute a brochure to advertise the specific workshops.

Call for Demonstrators - Summer Shapes- Summer 2010

The New Brunswick Crafts Council is seeking members to demonstrate fine craft processes and practices at our Retail Location in downtown Fredericton at the York-Sunbury Museum. This series of demonstrations will provide the general public an opportunity to converse with a fine craft artist while the artist works, and to encounter and view work-in-the-making, providing an accessible, interactive, and educational experience.

Demonstrations will be delivered on Wednesdays from 11:30 am – 1:30 pm, capitalizing on both the tourist and resident activity at that time of day. The series will be scheduled beginning June 16th and finishing August 25th.

Demonstrators will be promoted as a Featured Artist during the week of their demonstration and will also receive, for that week only, a discount on the commission taken from their sales, from 40% down to 20%.  For example, if you demonstrate on June 16th, you will be a Featured Artist for the week of June 14th-19th and the NBCC would only take a 20% commission from your sales for that week.

Please contact the NBCC office as soon as possible if you are interested in participating in this project so that we can promote the demonstrations.

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: NBCC - Summer Retail Shop

Location: York Sunbury Museum, Officer’s Square, Fredericton.

This summer the New Brunswick Crafts Council will open an additional retail gallery space in downtown Fredericton at the York Sunbury Museum site, beside Officer’s Square on Queen Street.  With this year’s temporary cancellation of the Barracks Craft Shops program, the Council was faced with finding an alternative location for a summer retail program comparable to Productive Hands.  Fortunately, the Council has found an ideal location at the York Sunbury Museum.  This retail outlet will not only serve as a summer shop featuring production line work, but also as a location for fine craft demonstrations by NBCC members. With this prime location in downtown Fredericton we hope to have many summer shoppers, tourists and lovers of fine craft visit our new second summer home.

Submit work for one or both exhibition locations; or chose the venue that is right for you.  Please see both call for entries attached.

EXTENDED!! Submission Deadline: June 4th, 2010

Please contact the NBCC office for submission form.

NBCC Traveling Exhibitions: “Capturing Form”, May 7 – June 19th at the SJAC

From May 7th – June 19th, 2010, the Saint John Arts Centre will host the New Brunswick Crafts Council exhibition “Capturing Form”, a selection of works by Alumni of the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design.  Capturing Form is a curated exhibition by New Brunswick College of Craft and Design Fibre Studio Head, and respected artist, Linda Brine. The exhibition is a testament to the cooperation between both the NBCC and the NB College of Craft and Design, as well as between the College and the Saint John Arts Center.

This exhibition is highlighting work from graduates of  the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design Photography and Metal studios. Featured artists include Jeff Crawford, Kyle Cunjak, Oliver Flecknell, Chris Giles, Kristyn Cooper, Christian Demmings, Jeneca Klausen, and Aidan Stanley.

Capturing Form may be understood to encompass both the subject matter and formal elements of the featured works by graduates of the Photography and Jewelry/Metal Arts studios.

Oliver Flecknell’s thoughtful black and white compositions document the pristine landscape and the landscape littered with the detritus of human activity. Jeff Crawford situates the figure in a luxurious landscape, again in black and white, emphasizing the underlying composition. Chris Giles captures some edgily spontaneous narrative colour portraits, and Kyle Cunjak documents recent travels with large colourful prints.

Capturing Form comprehends jewelry as body adornment; bracelets, pendants encircle and enhance the body, expressing our crow-like attraction to objects that shimmer, gleam, shine, reflect, beautify. Jewelry by Jeneca Klausen and Aidan Stanley exemplify this notion. Kristyn Cooper offers exquisite form + function: a knife that beautifully marries metal and wood; an elegant goblet, deceptively simple in form. A raised silver teapot by Aidan Stanley amazes in its technical prowess; sculpture by Christian Demming confounds in its organic, yet vaguely disturbing form.

Altogether an interesting juxtaposition of works that celebrates the accomplishments of these recent graduates of the NB College of Craft and Design.

The Exhibition dates for “Capturing Form are May 7th  until June 19th at the Saint John Arts Centre, 20 Hazen Ave, Saint John NB.

Call for Expressions of Interest: The Art of Harvest Fine Craft and Visual Art Exhibition & Silent Auction

The Harvest Jazz and Blues Festival is one of the many true expressions of what it means to live in

Fredericton. Fully rooted in the community, it attempts to reflect a spirit of panache and freedom that

simmers - often unseen - within the very hearts of Frederictonians. It is the time when we can truly

let our hair down, be a bit more uninhibited and experience a vibrant musical nightlife second to

none.

In this our 20th year, we’re looking for art – visual and fine craft - to celebrate and recognize the

spirit and vitality of Fredericton that has brought us to this point. We hope that the City’s brilliant and

inventive artistic community will move to create a lasting remembrance of this special anniversary.

Create work that is inspired by the music, the musicians, or the flow of energy that takes over our City

for one week each Fall. Artists are encouraged to interpret and respond to this theme through their

own unique medium and practice.

Selected items will be on exhibit at the Fredericton Playhouse throughout Festival weekend. This exhibition is

designed to expose the international Harvest Jazz & Blues audience to the work of New Brunswick visual and fine

craft artists who relay a message through their practice. Items will be

2011 Saidye Bronfman Award Nomination
Deadline to apply: June 1

The Saidye Bronfman Award is Canada’s foremost distinction for excellence in the fine crafts. “Fine Craft” is the term used to define an area of activity in the crafts that is frequently directed towards exhibition and/or sale in a gallery-like setting. This activity involves high levels of technical expertise as well as knowledge of the historical tradition and development of the craft. Through their work, fine crafts practitioners demonstrate new concepts and innovations that expand the boundaries of the medium and its techniques.

In addition, works by the recipient are acquired by the Canadian Museum of Civilization for its permanent collection. Nominees must be professional artists who have created an outstanding body of work, made a substantial contribution to the development of fine crafts in Canada and have been exhibited nationally and internationally. The Canada Council defines a professional artist as someone who has specialized training in the field (not necessarily in academic institutions), who is recognized as such by her or his peers (artists working in the same artistic tradition) and who has been a history of public presentation.

Janice Wright Cheney has known for almost a year she had been accepted into the Royal Canadian Academy of Art, one of the country’s most enduring cultural institutions, but it won’t be until tonight, at a dinner at the Château Laurier in Quebec City that will be attended by Gov. Gen. Michaëlle Jean, that her membership will be made official.

Janice Wright Cheney will be inducted into the Royal Canadian Academy of Art tonight in Quebec City.

"At first it seems like it’s so far away, but actually, it’s been really nice just to have that time to realize what it all means," Wright Cheney said Thursday from Fredericton as she tidied up from another celebration, a noon-time party following her eldest son’s graduation from the University of New Brunswick that morning.

Rather than dull her excitement, the intervening months have deepened her appreciation of the honour of joining the academy. Founded in 1880, its membership of more than 700 artists encompasses more than 20 disciplines, including the textile-based sculptures Wright Cheney, the sole Atlantic Canadian artist among the 20 new inductees, creates.

"The whole thing has grown in significance for me, to be honest," she said.

And the delay between receiving the news and tonight’s pomp has given her a chance to learn more about the academy itself.

"At first, I had an association with this largely male-dominated, colonial, patriarchal group of painters, like the Group of Seven, because that’s kind of the legacy, isn’t it?"

She was pleased to discover that, despite its rather stuffy name and historical underpinnings, the academy of today is an inclusive organization.

"I’m not the only one with a subversive or critical edge to my practice who are now joining the academy. It seems like the academy has thrown open its arms, and people with all sorts of practices and from all sorts of politics are part of it."

One of the most meaningful aspects of becoming an academician was being chosen by her contemporaries, she said.

"You get nice feedback all the time from your family and friends, you feel supported, but it’s really something to have a national committee of your peers give you that stamp of approval," she said. "It makes me feel like I’m making good decisions about the kind of work that I’m making."

An instructor at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design and the mother of two boys, Wright Cheney doesn’t have time to make commercial pieces, preferring instead to focus her practice on gallery or installation work that is intricate, cerebral, experimental and time-consuming.

"I make work that is meaningful to me. There’s no commodification, I’m not trying to make things to sell to people," she said.

"I think when you’re trying to be experimental in your work, you often wonder how it’s going to be perceived."

It’s not like she hasn’t had encouragement before. Wright Cheney has exhibited nationally and internationally. Her work is in the collections of The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, the New Brunswick Museum and the Beaverbrook Art Gallery. In 2004 she won the prestigious Strathbutler Award for Excellence in the Arts, one of New Brunswick’s top prizes.

Still, she takes comfort and support from this latest recognition.

"When you receive an award or some encouragement you think, OK, people get what I’m going. They like what I’m doing. It’s sort of like this little nod, like, keep going. Keep doing it."

People searching for a creative outlet stopped by the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design on Saturday for the school’s annual open house. The Daily Gleaner/Ray Bourgeois

It was an opportunity for instructors and students to show and talk about their work, and to encourage people tosign up for the edVentures program.

Now in its third year, edVentures will take place over a seven-week period in July and August. The program willinclude 130 workshops, with activities for people of all ages and skill levels. The courses range from sculpting and painting, to canoeing and yoga.

On Saturday, Karen Burk, studio head of the ceramics department at the college, demonstrated some decorating techniques using porcelain bowls.

She said a lot of people stopped by the open house over the course of the day.

"We’ve had people of all ages coming by, which is great," Burk said. "There have been some people thinking of retiring who are looking for a new career, some kids right out of high school and a lot of people in between."

She said many of the edVentures workshops are accessible to people without any experience, but they can also benefit people with more advanced skills.

"The ceramics courses we offer are geared toward beginners," she said. "Some people have taken the course a couple times, though, and they want to come back to do more work.

"I think many people find working with ceramics and pottery is relaxing. It’s very different from what they do in their regular work lives."

Craft college instructor Melanie Mitchell demonstrated a Japanese dyeing process called shibori. She said that’s one of the techniques she’ll be teaching during an edVentures workshop called To Dye For. She said most people had never heard of the process and were interested to see samples of dyed cloth.

Mitchell said she thinks people like doing something creative and productive during the summer months.

"Generally summer’s a lazy time, but that can be boring," she said. "This gives people the chance to have fun, do something they’ve never done before and learn something completely new."

College director Michael Maynard said the open house was a also chance to encourage people to take evening or fall classes.

He said he wants people to know about all the things the college has to offer.

"The common phrase I hear is that the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design is one of New Brunswick’s best kept secrets," Maynard said. "We’re trying to change that by bringing in new people."

Maynard said the college is a founding and principal partner of edVentures, which is organized by Fredericton Tourism in partnership with other outlets around the city.

He said people were already signing up for the workshops, and he expects more to follow suit.

"I think edVentures reflects a lot of the core values we have here in our full-time programming at the college," Maynard said. "What the learning experience is all about is combining skill development with creativity and, to be honest, just fun.

"In this day and age where we are so conditioned to watching television or movies or playing online games, when you can actually create something with your hands that is beautiful and functional, it means a lot to people."
